How It All Started? The Rhythm of the Wheel: Where It All Began
Every craft has a birthplace, and mine was a quiet corner of our family home, right beside my mother’s domestic sewing machine.
As a child, traditional schoolbooks and classroom lessons held very little charm for me. While other kids were captivated by stories in textbooks, my eyes were perpetually drawn to the magic unfolding at my mother’s side. I would sit on the floor, mesmerized by the hypnotic motion of her feet pressing against the treadle pedal.
To a young child, that machine was not merely a mechanical tool; it was a living, breathing instrument of creation.
I vividly remember the sequence that fascinated me:
The downward press of the foot pedal.
The grand sweep of the lower wheel spinning.
The leather belt transferring motion upward to the handwheel on the right.
The sudden, swift rise and fall of the needle bar, driving the needle through layers of cloth while the feed dogs underneath pulled the fabric forward in perfect harmony.
It felt like pure magic. How could simple iron gears and a bobbin transform plain pieces of cloth into something warm, whole, and beautiful?
Seeing my endless fascination, my mother gave me a long, simple strap of scrap fabric to keep me occupied. I didn't care about sewing functional clothes yet; I just wanted to feel part of that rhythm. I began "sewing" without thread.
I would sit at the wheel, guiding that long strap under the presser foot, feeling the steady vibration of the machine as the unthreaded needle pierced the fabric repeatedly. Even without thread holding anything together, the simple act of guiding fabric under the needle felt like my true calling.

Lost in the hypnotic trance of the spinning wheel and the rhythmic click-clack of the needle, my tiny hands guided the strap of cloth a fraction of an inch too close. In a split second, the heavy steel needle came down with force, penetrating straight through my right index finger nail—through and through.
The pain was instant, sharp, and overwhelming. The quiet afternoon was shattered, and what followed was a blur of panic, a trip to the hospital, and several intense, painful days of medical care.
For weeks, my hand was bandaged, and school was temporarily out of the picture. Anyone else might have developed a lifelong fear of sewing machines after such a terrifying injury. My family certainly thought my fascination with the machine was cured for good.
They were wrong.
The moment the pain subsided and the bandages came off, my eyes went right back to that sewing machine. The fear wasn't there—only the pull of the craft.
To put my family's mind at ease, I adjusted my routine. I returned to the machine, peddling the wheel down, watching the handwheel spin on the right, but now I sewed not only without thread, but for a while, without a needle altogether. I just loved the movement, the cadence, the feel of the fabric sliding beneath my touch.
